EMjoy is currently available on two platforms: Live365.com and laut.fm. While both platforms try to earn money by selling ads and / or subscriptions, EMjoy as a station is - as most stations on Live365.com and laut.fm - a non-commercial project. This means I do not earn any money with it.

As a listener at Live365.com you have the choice to listen either to the standard stream with ads for free or to become a preferred member (aka VIP) of Live365.com and listen to the ad-free stream. Of course preferred membership is not restricted to one station - you can listen to all stations ad-free.
Laut.fm currently only offers a stream with (german) ads.

The "EM" in EMjoy stands for "Electronic Music" - originally EMjoy was created as a station that plays mostly electronic music. But that's history, the spectrum of genres that are played on EMjoy has widened during the last years.

EMjoy does not want to be a "one-genre" station. Playing the same kind of music over hours is boring. When listening to EMjoy for several hours you'll notice that music mix changes every one or two hours.

EMjoy plays "manually" compiled playlists for 6 hours per day from Monday to Saturday. The rest of the day is filled with different shows that are based on pool from which tracks are randomly chosen. On laut.fm you can view the schedule. On Live365.com there is no visible schedule because the ads make it impossible to tell you any exact start times for the shows.

The Rules of Live365.com do not allow to "publish advance program guides or use other means to pre-announce when particular sound recordings will be played." Laut.fm has similar rules.

I started listening to Electronic Music in the late 80s or early 90s. At that time I got in contact with the music of artists such as Jean-Michel Jarre, Vangelis, Klaus Schulze or Tangerine Dream and a lot of other artists playing similar music. Partially that music could be categorized as "Ambient" or "New Age", but most of it does not fit into any genre definition associated with Electronic Music today.
In 1994 Martin Rothhaar and I founded MEMI, a german online magazine for that kind of electronic music. A couple of other guys joined the team, in its best times MEMI had more than 20000 visits per month. Today, updates are rare.

I started discovering the kind of music I listen to today - and which is played on EMjoy - in the late 90s. Martin urged me to listen to the "Café del Mar" compilations which I liked very much. I also started searching for music I like on sites like (the old) mp3.com that gave me the possibility to explore a lot of genres without wasting any money for CDs of artists from which I didn't know if I would like their music. But finally I started buying more and more CDs of that kind of music.

In late 2001 someone sent me a link to Live365.com. I liked it immediately. Before I wrote reviews for MEMI, trying to describe music in words - which was always very difficult for me. I spent of lot of thoughts on how it could be possible to introduce the artists and albums to the people by letting them listen to the music without getting in conflict with copyright rules and without getting poor by paying license fees. A station at Live365.com was the solution - EMjoy was born.
